I have admired David Hockney's work for years - long before he became the most critically acclaimed and universally popular artist of our time. Admiration turned into hero worship when I saw Hockney's designs on stage at The Royal Opera House, when he took Stravinsky's opera Le Rossignol and turned it into a glorious fairytale fantasy setting it in the colours of old blue and white porcelain, with an inventiveness only equalled by the design work he did for Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress.
