NEW YORK -- As one of the few segments of the vitamin category that had shown growth over the past few years multivitamins had helped keep the market moving forward.
But during the past 12 months, despite positive press about the benefits of vitamin supplementation, ongoing product development and improved formulations, multivitamins, like their single-letter cousins, have fallen on relatively hard times.
According to Information Resources Inc. (IRI), overall mass market sales of multivitarnins slipped 1.2% during the 52 weeks ended August 19. Drug store volume declined 1.6%.
