A RAILTRACK boss was last night named as the new managing director of Arriva Trains Northern.

Ray Price joined the company yesterday, just days after the firm that provides bus and rail services on Merseyside was told it faces a pounds 2m fine.

He replaces Nigel Patterson who left Arriva just a few weeks ago.

The rail industry watchdog, the Strategic Rail Authority, has given notice of the fine and warned that Arriva Trains Northern could lose the right to operate a major rail franchise in the North East. The action follows the cancellation of thousands of rail journeys since May.
