In Kinks & Hints, September 2000, we discussed the issue of voltage drop and wire gauge calculations in response to a dealer's need to establish the correct percentage of voltage drop at the end of a NAC (Notification Appliance Circuit). According to the dealer, he called the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Quincy, Mass., about this and no one had an answer.
NFPA has addressed this issue in a short, timely commentary contained in Section 4-2 of the National Fire Alarm Handbook, 1999 Edition. It states "Voltage at any appliance on the NAG should not drop below the limits of the appliance design to ensure correct intensity and audibility."
