All last summer, while scientific controversy raged over whether University of Utah chemists had actually demonstrated cold" nuclear fusion in a tabletop apparatus, three chemists at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island kept news of their own fusion experiment under the table. Though they had first detected evidence for a different kind of fusion last April, they tempered their elation with caution.
