The pain in Etan Thomas' right foot tore at him, never relenting, reminding him stride after stride that something was wrong.
Thomas, then a rookie with the Dallas Mavericks, said nothing. Turf toe, the team's phyicians told him . Thomas played on.
"I'm a rookie. What do I know?" Thomas, who was the 12th pick in the 2000 draft after a record-setting career at Syracuse University, said in a recent telephone conversation. "I got hurt and tried to suck it up and play through it, when I problably should've stopped."
