Nov. 1--SAYOD, Afghanistan -- American heavy bombers unleashed a torrent of explosives on Taliban positions north of Kabul in the most intensive assaults yet in 24 days of attacks against Afghanistan's hard-line Islamic rulers.
At least four high-flying B-52s, leaving two twin vapor trails in the clear sky as they approached from the north, dropped dozens of bombs in a thunderous attack on front line positions 25 miles north of Kabul, near the Bagram airfield. The Taliban militia controls the heights above the base.
