Nov. 2--HOUSTON--After two years as the nation's smoggiest city, Houston appears likely to return the title to Los Angeles this year, officials said Thursday.

So far in 2001, Los Angeles has recorded 36 days when ozone, the key ingredient in smog, exceeded the federal standard. Houston has had 30 days when readings at one or more monitoring stations exceeded 125 parts per billion.

Although smog season is over in Los Angeles, it's not over until the end of this month in Houston. But officials said that Houston is unlikely to catch up because cooler weather has ...
