JIMMY YOUNG was last night battling to hold on to his Radio 2 show after a younger presenter revealed that the BBC had secretly offered him his job.
Mr Young, 80, knew nothing of the approach to 40-year-old Nicky Campbell and is said to be deeply hurt at being kept in the dark.
He has 50 years in broadcasting and a track record of consistently high listening figures. But, despite claims to the contrary, controllers at Radio 2 have secretly been courting Campbell for 18 months.
