Apoptosis is an essential and well-controlled form of cell death occurring under a variety of physiological conditions. However, under pathological conditions, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), apoptosis results in uncontrolled death of valuable neurons. A key mechanism in apoptosis is the activation of caspase-3.
