CHICAGO -- Slow-wave sleep activity impairment occurs early in the development of boys with major depressive disorder, but is not evident in girls, Dr. Roseanne Armitage said at the joint annual meeting of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society.
Sixteen symptomatic but unmedicated adolescents, aged 13-18 years, were compared with 16 healthy controls who had no family or personal history of psychopathology. Each group consisted of eight boys and eight girls who spent 2 consecutive nights in a sleep laboratory where power spectral analysis was used to quantify slow-wave activity.
