US warplanes launch air strikes north of Kabul and near Mazar-i-Sharif to open the way for an offensive by anti-Taliban forces on key cities. Up to four US planes launch missiles at entrenched Taliban reservists near the former Bagram air base. US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says: "We certainly are ready to have the alliance forces move both north and south. We're not holding back at all".
