Asthma is the most common chronic disorder in children and adolescents. About 4.8 million children under 18 years of age have asthma (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 1999). Children living in poverty in inner-city urban areas have higher rates of morbidity and mortality from asthma, with approximately 2-3 times higher rates in African American children (Weitzman, Gortmaker, Sobol, & Perrin, 1992).
