At last, an engineer has come clean on the problem of shower curtains that billow in and stick to exposed flesh. David Schmidt, assistant professor in the mechanical and industrial engineering department at the University of Massachusetts, has mapped the physical forces that act on a shower curtain.
The desire to expose the answer to the shower curtain mystery is a natural extension of one of Schmidt's areas of expertise -- computer modeling of sprays. Using commercially available software that he has modified to include spray capabilities, Schmidt spent two weeks of time on his home computer to get to the bottom of the problem.
