Many scholars, including Margaret B. Wilkerson, note that Lorraine Hansberry was the first African-American playwright to explore, in her final work, Les Blancs, the African quest for freedom from European colonialists. Hansberry studied African history and read about uprisings in Kenya and other African nations before beginning Les Blancs to create a work that is obviously a well-informed examination of events in Africa. However, despite the play's inherent Africanness, readers must remember that it was written by an African American for an American audience.
