SHARPSBURG, Md. _ Antietam battlefield is a special place.
Gettysburg is too overdone with monuments. Vicksburg is too far away. Virginia has too many battlefields. I keep coming back to Antietam National Battlefield in western Maryland.
That may be because it was the first invasion of the North by the Confederate troops under Gen. Robert E. Lee.
It may be because of the lack of commercial development around the battlefield. If you take away the cars and buses, the battlefield looks much as it did in 1862.
The area has the look and feel of 19th-century farmland, complete with wooden split-rail fences, stone bridges and rock walls.
