Nov. 5--Weeks before Gov. Gray Davis announced a potential terrorist threat to California's most famous bridges, Lawrence Livermore scientists identified a dangerous vulnerability in the Bay Bridge.
That structural Achilles' heel, which could be shared by other suspension bridges from California to New York, was kept secret during the past month while Caltrans "hardened" the Bay Bridge and others against attack, officials said this weekend. The Golden Gate Bridge is not considered as vulnerable as the Bay Bridge.
