RESEARCH INTO NANOMATERIALS, medical plastics, and cleaner energy were among the topics featured at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS), held last week in Chicago.
Scientists at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center (Yorktown Heights, NY) say they have created the first functional logic circuit within a single carbon nanotube. "We believe that nanotubes are the top candidate to replace silicon when chip features can't be made any smaller," says Phaedon Avouris, manager/nanometer-scale science and technology at the Watson Center. Researchers changed the nanotube's electrical properties to create negatively and positively charged regions.
