SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. _ The NHL fined forward Brendan Shanahan $1,000, the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement, for mocking referee Shane Heyer on Friday night after the Red Wings' 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders.
Shanahan received a gross misconduct for flipping Heyer the puck after the horn, as if giving him the game puck, then clapping his gloves and smiling. Heyer had called Shanahan for slashing with one minute left; the referees hadn't called anything after a high stick cut Shanahan's left cheek. Shanahan was upset the Wings were called for four penalties in the third period of a one-goal game between the league's top teams.
