The smoke odor and haze that loomed over Hampton Roads for two days has mostly departed - for now.
If the forecast holds, the winds will not shift again until Wednesday, which offers most Hampton Roads residents relief from the smoke at least until then.
However, parts of southern Virginia Beach still have a lingering smoke odor. That may continue sporadically for several days, said National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Sammler.
Southern Virginia Beach's proximity to a Currituck County, N.C., brush fire makes it more likely that winds will carry the smoke there, Sammler said.
