At the start of September, New Jersey's business market was experiencing close to full employment despite a nationwide increase in corporate layoffs. As a result, a number of companies opted to diversify their facilities in an attempt to increase employee retention by easing costs and commutes.
Morgan Stanley Dean Witter is an example of this trend, moving employees from their Midtown Manhattan offices to locations in New Jersey during the past six months, their recent moves to other New York locations, and announcing last week the pending sale of their new 32-story Midtown office building at 745 Seventh Ave. to Lehman Brothers.
