Several industrial plants have announced layoffs and cutbacks that will put more than 1,500 Arkansans out of work.
Aalfs Manufacturing Inc. of Sioux City, Iowa, intends to close its denim apparel manufacturing plants at Mena, Arkadelphia, Malvern and Glenwood by Dec. 14.
The announcement means the loss of 856 jobs.
There are no current plans to close the company's distribution center at Texarkana or the sales. office at Dallas, according to administrative assistant Linda Young, but the closings mean Aalfs will have no manufacturing operations left in the U.S.
