IT USED to be one of Britain's dirtiest rivers, a noxious soup of domestic sewage and industrial waste.
But after a 15-year, pounds 5bn cleanup, the miracle of the Mersey is being unveiled 10 years ahead of target.
The first salmon in living memory was caught this week at Woolston Weir near Warrington. Campaigners were working towards 2010 before fish were spotted leaping in the Mersey.
The river now attracts 300,000 migratory birds every year feeding on its fish population, which now number 70 different species.
The amazing turnaround is the legacy of the Mersey Basin Campaign, set up in 1985. ...
