Alois Brunner was on trial in Paris for crimes against humanity.
Gasps and sobs came from the court's public gallery as the prosecutor laid out the case against the former SS officer who was accused of deporting 250 Jewish orphans from France to Auschwitz concentration camp just weeks before the end of the Second World War.
Among them was a 15-day-old baby boy: the court heard how a guard had kicked him to death in front of the other children when they arrived at Auschwitz.
Most were then led away, hand-in-hand, to the gas chambers. A few were kept alive for horrific medical experiments that killed them too.
