Northern Midwest: in for a cold winter The headlines have been disquieting this year in the Upper Midwest, and particularly in Minnesota, which has taken a double hit of defense slowdown and computer-company troubles. "Honeywell cuts 4000 jobs," "Northrop plans 2500 job cuts," and "Overhaul at Unisys to cut jobs 7%," are just a few examples.
Some--but not all-companies are managing to spare most of their engineering staffs, but the survivors are overworked and unhappy. "There's a limit to how much extra work people can absorb," says an executive at one Honeywell division.
