CHESAPEAKE -- The date was Nov. 7, 1997. Western Branch, ranked No. 1 in South Hampton Roads, was playing No. 4 Deep Creek for the Southeastern District title.
Western Branch came into the game 9-0. Deep Creek was 7-2 but unbeaten in the district. If the Hornets defeated Western Branch, they would win their third consecutive district title.
The Bruins prevailed 15-12, thanks to an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
The victory not only ended Western Branch's 20-year playoff drought, but it also turned up the thermostat on what has become one of the most heated rivalries in South Hampton ...
