Stores selling hemp granola are no different from dealers peddling heroin under a new federal rule ordering retailers to pull many hemp foods from their shelves.

Local merchants say the rule will not make much of a dent in their revenues, but may deprive consumers of a promising source of nutrition.

The rule was issued Oct. 9 by the Drug Enforcement Agency. It states that hemp foods -- such as granola, ice cream and snack bars -- may not be manufactured or sold if they contain any traces of TetraHydraCannibinol, or THC. THC is a schedule I controlled substance and is the active ingredient in marijuana.
