A magical hunt in great country yields the buck of a lifetime.
There were several deer far up in a sunlit pocket, moving and feeding between scattered oaks. Kirk Kelso had spotted them with his binoculars at about 1,000 yards. I was still trying to identify some gray specks amid the brown rocks and dark oaks as deer when Kelso ran for his spotting scope. He took one quick look and pronounced: "That's him. Let's go!"
It wasn't that I didn't trust his judgement, but this was the first morning, and things were happening fast. Besides, I like to be a part of what's going on. So I said, "Him who? Have we got time for me to take a look?"
