The Port of Portland, like New Orleans, is an "inland deep-draft" port. The port, located approximately 105 miles from the Pacific Ocean on the lower Columbia River, handles both inland barges and oceangoing ships.
The port is sizable. It's the largest wheat export port in the U.S., second largest export tonnage port on the West Coast, second largest volume auto-handling port on the West Coast and fifth largest in the U.S., and the 15th largest container port in the U.S. In 1999, the total value of its waterborne trade--imports and exports--was over $9.57 billion.
