Nov. 12--Sargento Foods Inc., known for selling packages of shredded cheese in supermarkets, is launching a new business that sells high-end specialty cheese through catalog orders and the Internet.

Plymouth-based Sargento hopes to break into the food gift industry, which sells gourmet items through such catalogs as Swiss Colony or Harry and David.

It's a big departure for Sargento, which buys bulk cheese and then slices, shreds, packages and sells it through supermarkets, convenience stores and other mass outlets.
