Just read your article on Tugboat Annie (May/June 2001 issue). You provided a time warp, back to 1950 when I'd just graduated from high school, and was working the Williams, Arizona, post office.
The postmaster finally trusted me to handle Saturdays alone, which became my favorite day of the week. After typing out the mail, giving it to the courier to make the Santa Fe's mail train schedule, I opened the sack of incoming mail and distributed it to the cubbyholes. After all the work was done, I'd pull--from a box I knew the owner wasn't coming in today--the latest Saturday Evening Post, sit in the postmaster's swivel chair with my feet on his desk, and lose myself ...
