It seemed like an omen, a premonition, a foreshadowing out of a Sally Lockhart mystery. Three days before my scheduled interview with author Philip Pullman, I was browsing through a display of his books in a shop on London's Kensington High Street. Suddenly a teenage girl pulled her mother to the display and exclaimed (in an American accent), "Look! Another new one!" She was holding up a copy of Northern Lights, the British edition of what American readers know as The Golden Compass. The librarian in me couldn't stay on holiday; I explained the title difference and steered her towards the real "new one": The Amber Spyglass, still in hardcover only. "I won't ask for ...
