When AT&T Broadband in Boston installed some new servers a few weeks ago, some of its high-speed data customers lost service.

While accounts were being shifted, files containing thousands of machine access code (MAC) addresses-the codes that identify individual customers' computers--apparently did not make the transition to the new servers, and those computers were denied Internet protocol (IP) addresses and access to AT&T's network. For some customers with multiple computers, an AT&T Broadband spokesman said, it meant one computer got access while another didn't.
