PHILADELPHIA _ Locked in a safe, in the office at Northeast High School in Philadelphia, is a book.
Albert Einstein signed it. So did Babe Ruth. Herbert Hoover and J. Edgar Hoover. Marian Anderson and Paul Robeson.
Did I mention Adm. Richard E. Byrd? Lou Gehrig? Ann Sheridan? Woodrow Wilson?
All these and many more _ the highest and mightiest of their day _ visited this city school to accept an award from the student senate.
These days, as the state of Pennsylvania plans to take over the city schools and public education is so disrespected, it seemed like a good time to visit Northeast High and recall that America's best and brightest ...
