Have you noticed a pecking order (pun intended) among the birds at your feeders? Obviously large birds will chase off smaller ones. But I've noticed a rank order among large birds that appear similar in size and have a reputation for assertive behavior.
Having moved to a suburban neighborhood with mature pines and extensive oakbrush, we find ourselves hosting a variety of crow-family birds - magpies, scrub jays, eastern blue jays, Steller's jays and a few crows. The interaction of these species is like watching the social dynamics of preschoolers on the playground.
