Bakker Competent, Trial Resumes
A federal judge has ruled that TV evangelist Jim Bakker is competent to stand trial. The trial had been postponed after Bakker was found cowering beneath a couch in his lawyer's office in the fetal position. A pyschiatrist said that Bakker had suffered a "panic attack" and was not suffering from any permanently disabling mental disorder.
As the trial resumed, Federal District Judge Robert Potter asked Bakker whether he understood what was happening and whether he felt he could assist in his defense. Bakker replied, "I'm very tired but I believe I can do that."
