COLUMBIAN CHEMICALS (MARIETTA, GA) says it will temporarily hair production at its 54,000-m.t./ year carbon black plant at El Dorado, AR, effective November 30. The company cites "continued over-capacity, coupled with an uncertain business outlook." The move will result in the loss of 50 jobs at the site. Columbian is the second-largest producer of carbon black after Cabot.
"Overcapacity of carbon black in North America has eroded our profitability," says Manuel J. Iraola, chairman and president of Columbian.
