Nov. 20--A year or less from hitting the market, Eli Lilly and Co.'s replacement for Prozac outperformed potential rival Paxil in the latest Lilly-sponsored patient tests.
Lilly said its drug duloxetine reduced symptoms of depression better than Paxil, the GlaxoSmithKline drug that ranked as the second most-prescribed antidepressant last year.
Based on its performance in a range of tests, "duloxetine may become a potent first-line antidepressant therapy," said Dr. John H. Greist, clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin Medical School.
