The years 1675 and 1676 were "frightfull times" for the English colonists on the Virginia frontier. Attacks on the settlers by various American Indian groups had increased steadily. The frontiersmen turned to Governor Sir William Berkeley for help. They urged him to grant Nathaniel Bacon a commission to lead the militia. The colonists hoped to end the Indian attacks and make the region safe for settlement.
