Bone Grown from Bone Marrow Cells

Olympus Optical Company, has formed a joint R & D team with the Tissue Engineering Research Center, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science & Technology in growing bone marrow cells, using a technology originally developed by Olympus. The basis of this technology is beta-tricalcium phosphate pioneered by Olympus for use in filling gaps in damaged bones.

In their report on the laboratory experiments, the team describes how they inserted rat bone marrow cells into a porous cube containing beta-tricalcium phosphate, and after a two week period this was transplanted into a rat.
