Fullerene c60 has a capability of measuring surface temperatures.(The National Aerospace Laboratory)(Brief Article)

The National Aerospace Laboratory working together with the Tokyo Institute of Technology, has developed a technology to measure the surface temperatures of targeted objects, by exploiting the light emitting property of fullerene Carbon 60.

The existing surface temperature measurement method employs sensors, but these can only supply information from the area on which each sensor is attached.

However, fullerene C60 under certain conditions, emits light. When a Xenon lamp is shone on fullerene C60 the molecules show signs of agitation and emit a red light, and the higher the ambient temperature the lesser the strength of emitted light.
