In Japan, there is a three way rivalry between NEC Corporation, Hitachi Ltd. and Toshiba Corporation on the recording capacities of magnetic discs. NEC has already developed technology giving a recording capacity of 100 gigabits per square inch, mainly by reducing the insulation film thickness to just 0.7nm, and cutting down noise. This technology has yet to be commercialised.

Hitachi Central Research Laboratory has achieved a 64 gigabits per square inch recording capacity, which it hopes to elevate to 100 gigabits per square inch in 2002.
