Nov. 20--The Mitchell family faced an unusual dilemma in the 1970s -- give up the goat they were raising or sell their Southern California home and keep the goat.
They dumped the house, a decision that has had long-lasting changes for the family and, many years later, inspired the launch of a family-run goat cheese business, Mitchell's Melody Dairy.
Today, the small company in Sloughhouse is one of about 15 goat-cheese makers in California -- and the only such producer in Sacramento County.
