If you're Tom Birmingham these days, you might long for the bike.

Oh, those simple summer days of Birmingham's statewide bicycle junket, when the Democratic Senate president's daily worries were potholes on the rolling Berkshire hills and whether the Spandex might be just a bit much for the local press.

Now he's co-authored a spending plan with nothing but bad news, special interests looking for blood and colleagues who thought they'd see district riches now bringing home only red ink.

Cue acting Gov. Jane M. Swift - who's already dreaming up no-show Legislature campaign ads depicting this King Tom as culprit No. 1.
