After years of wrangling, Madison is snuffing smoking in the private workplace.
The City Council on Tuesday voted, 13-5, with one abstention to ban smoking in private places of employment effective March 1, although small businesses will have until Dec. 31, 2002.
"This is about what you do to somebody else ... forcing a co-worker to breathe secondhand smoke," Mayor Sue Bauman said.
Renae Sieling of the Tobacco Free Dane County Coalition said, "Madison is ready."
