After Best Mate has won this afternoon's First National Gold Cup, Henrietta Knight will be asked about the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup. She might say: "Why on earth is jump racing's top championship chase run over three miles and about two and a half furlongs? It's high time the Gold Cup was run over three miles."
There is no good reason for running the Gold Cup over an extra two and a half furlongs, only historical explanations, and the fact that we have got used to it.
