SHE sat regally, a slight smile on her classically beautiful face, accepting the showers of admiration and love, listening once again to shouts of "Brava! Brava!"
Marian Anderson, 87, the famed contralto who retired from the concert stage in 1965, now lives in near-seclusion, avoiding public attention, but was persuaded by friends this summer to attend a gala evening at the Charles Ives Center for the Arts, in Danbury, Conn., near her home.
