Abortion Rights Strategies After Webster
Just after completion of the July/August Network News, the Supreme Court handed down its decision in Webster v. Reproductive Health Services. The Court did not overtly overturn Roe, but let stand Missouri's restrictions. The two most severe restrictions forbid the use of public money, medical personnel or facilities for abortion services, and require tests to determine fetal viability beginning at 20 weeks gestation. The majority also rejected Roe's framework of trimesters, perhaps giving states the power to restrict the availability of abortion from conception.
