EACH of the papers presented in this section places drug use in an historical and interdisciplinary context, opening the debate over the implications of national and global drug policy. These papers, and the Altered States of Consciousness conference to which they contributed, are important for three reasons. First, interdisciplinary discussions of drugs and drug policy are too rare but are necessary if we are to develop an integrated understanding of drugs and their use. Second, the language of "altered states of consciousness" has disappeared from public discourse yet remains crucial to the development of that discourse.
