U.S. caustic soda prices are under severe pressure from extremely weak demand, particularly from the pulp and paper and alumina industries, producers say. Spot prices have fallen to $165-$175/ton fob, a decline of $5/ton from the previous week, and are more than 50% from this year's peak in January, market sources say. Contract prices have slipped $40-$50/ton since September, to $190-$220/ton. Chlorine contracts have remained flat at $30-$60/ton fob since July.
